Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 September 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Petkey, LLC ("Petkey," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information about you when you use our websites, mobile applications, pet registration, Petkey Plus subscription, online shop, and related services (together, the "Services"). By using the Services, you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services. Notice at collection: we collect the categories of personal information described in Section 1 and use them for the purposes in Section 2. We do not sell your registration or pet information to third parties for their own purposes. If you ask us for an insurance quote your details go to the insurance partner, and we share limited information with advertising partners, as described in Section 3; to opt out of either, see "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" in Section 6.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide

We collect information you give us directly, including your name and contact details; account credentials; payment information; information about your pet provided during registration (such as microchip number, breed, and description); and, if you use Petkey Plus, the veterinary, vaccination and health information you choose to store for your pet. We also collect the content of communications you send us. Separately, where your veterinary practice uses a practice management system we connect to and chooses to share registration information with us, we receive your contact details and your pet's details from that system. That is not a Petkey Plus feature and does not depend on your having a Subscription. Where a registration is created for you in this way, we email you to tell you, with a link to these Terms and to your account.

Information collected automatically

When you use the Services, we automatically collect certain information, including your IP address, browser type, device information, pages viewed, and navigation patterns. We use cookies and similar technologies (including web beacons that tell us whether an email has been opened) to operate the Services, remember your preferences, measure usage, and support marketing. You can disable cookies through your browser settings, although some features may not work properly if you do.

2. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to: create and manage your account and pet registrations; process transactions and Subscription billing, including automatic renewals; provide the Services, including Lost Pet Alerts and storage of veterinary and vaccination records; respond to your requests and provide customer support; send transactional messages such as renewal reminders; send promotions, updates, and special offers (which you can opt out of); protect against fraud and secure the Services; and comply with legal obligations.

3. How We Share Information

We share personal information as described below. We do not sell your registration or pet information to third parties for their own marketing or business purposes. Two of the disclosures below - the insurance quote you choose to request, and advertising - count as a "sale" or "sharing" under California and other state privacy laws, and you can opt out of both as described in Sections 6 and 7.

Providing your contact information to a veterinarian, shelter, rescue, or a person who has found your pet — so that your pet can be identified and returned to you — is the core purpose of registration and is not a "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information. Disclosures to our service providers who act on our behalf are also not sales. These disclosures are essential to the Service and are not affected by any opt-out.

  • Service providers. We share information with companies that perform functions on our behalf (such as payment processing, hosting, email delivery, and customer support), and only the information they need to perform those functions.
  • Veterinary practice management systems. Where a veterinary practice uses a practice management system we connect to (for example, Covetrus) and chooses to share registration information with us, we receive contact and pet details from that system so that a registration can be created or updated for their client. We use that information to register the pet and maintain the record.
  • Verified Pro account holders. Veterinary practices, animal shelters, rescues and other professional organizations can hold a Petkey Pro account. Where we have verified one of these organizations on application, it can look up the contact details recorded against a microchip number directly, so that it can contact you without going through us when your pet is found or presented to it. Verification is not automatic and we may withdraw it. We limit and log these lookups, and verified holders are bound by the Petkey Pro Terms, which permit them to use what they find only to identify a pet and contact you about it, and never for marketing. This is part of the core purpose of registration and is not a "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information; it is not affected by any opt-out.
  • Your pet’s public profile. Anyone who enters your pet’s microchip number or product ID on petkey.org can view your pet’s profile. You choose what that profile shows, in your account privacy settings, and you can change it at any time. "Pet Only" shows basic pet information such as name, microchip number and photos, and shows no owner contact information; someone who finds your pet can still reach you using the contact owner button on the profile, which sends you an email without revealing your details to them. "Contact Info If Missing" also shows your name and phone number, but only while your pet is marked as missing. "Pet & Contact Info" always shows your pet’s information together with your contact details, and is the setting new registrations start on. These settings control the public profile only; they do not affect our own use of your details to reunite you with your pet, or access by verified Pro account holders.
  • Insurance quotes. If you ask us for a pet insurance quote, the details you enter for that purpose are passed to our insurance partner so that it can give you a quote. The insurance partner may then contact you about that quote by telephone, text or email, including where you started a quote and did not complete it. We only pass details you have entered when requesting a quote: we do not pass your registration record or your pet’s details, and if you have not requested a quote nothing about you is sent to an insurance partner at all. The insurance partner pays us a referral fee. Out of caution we treat this as a "sale" under California and some other state laws, and you can opt out as described in Sections 6 and 7.
  • Advertising and analytics partners. We may share information with advertising and analytics partners to measure and improve our marketing. Depending on the technologies used, this may be considered "sharing" or a "sale" under certain state laws (see Section 6).
  • Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Petkey, our users, or others.
  • Business transfers. Your information may be transferred as part of a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets.
  • With your consent. We share information in other ways with your consent or at your direction.

4. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use session and persistent cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies to operate and secure the Services, remember your settings, understand usage, and support advertising. You can manage cookies through your browser.

5. Your Choices

You can opt out of marketing emails by using the unsubscribe link in any marketing message or by contacting us at privacy@petkey.org. You can manage cookies through your browser. California residents and residents of other states with applicable privacy laws have additional choices described in Section 6, including the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. If you have opted in to SMS text messages, you can opt out at any time by replying STOP; message and data rates may apply, and consent to texts is not a condition of purchase.

6. Your California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, the "CCPA/CPRA"), gives you the rights described in this section. Residents of other states with comparable laws may have similar rights.

Categories of information and how we use them

In the past 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information: identifiers and contact details; payment and commercial information; pet information; veterinary and health information (for Petkey Plus features); internet and network activity; and inferences drawn from the above. We collect this information from you directly, automatically through your use of the Services, from veterinary practices that share registration information with us through a practice management system, and from our service providers and partners. We use it for the purposes described in Section 2 and disclose it to the categories of recipients described in Section 3.

Your rights

  • The right to know and access the personal information we have collected about you;
  • The right to delete personal information, subject to legal exceptions;
  • The right to correct inaccurate personal information;
  • The right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information;
  • The right to limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information; and
  • The right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights.

Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information

We do not sell your registration or pet information to third parties for their own purposes. Two disclosures fall within the definitions of "sale" or "sharing" under California law: the details you enter when you ask us for an insurance quote, which go to the insurance partner that pays us a referral fee; and identifiers and online activity we share with advertising partners for cross-context behavioral advertising. You can opt out of both. We do not sell or share your payment card information, your veterinary or health information, or the personal information of anyone we know to be under 16.

California residents may opt out of the sale or sharing of their personal information by using the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link at petkey.org/donotsell, or by emailing us at privacy@petkey.org.

Opting out does not stop disclosures that are necessary to provide the Service you requested — including sharing your contact information to help identify and return your pet, or sharing with our service providers. The opt-out applies to the two disclosures described in Section 3: the insurance referral you request, and the identifiers and online activity we share with advertising partners.

How to exercise your rights

To exercise your rights, email privacy@petkey.org. We will verify your request as required by law. You may use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf with proof of authorization. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

Residents of other U.S. states

If you are a resident of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, or another state with a comprehensive consumer-privacy law, you may have similar rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a copy of your personal information, and to opt out of the sale of your personal information and of targeted advertising. To exercise these rights, or to appeal a decision about a request, contact us at privacy@petkey.org, and we will respond as required by the applicable state law.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as needed to provide the Services and maintain your pet's registration (for the life of the registered pet), and thereafter as required for our legitimate business, legal, tax, and record-keeping purposes.

8. Security

We take commercially reasonable steps to protect personal information from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a data breach affecting your personal information occurs, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as required by applicable law.

9. Children's Privacy

The Services are intended for users who are at least 18 years old, and users under 18 are not authorized to use the Services. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us at privacy@petkey.org and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

10. International Users

Petkey is based in the United States and processes and stores information in the United States. If you access the Services from outside the United States, you understand and consent to the transfer, storage, and processing of your information in the United States.

11. Third-Party Links

The Services may contain links to third-party websites and services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties, and we encourage you to review their privacy policies.

12. Facebook Data Deletion

Facebook login and Facebook account functionality have been discontinued and are no longer available on the Services. Historically, for accounts that used Facebook login, only an email address was collected, and solely to validate login. If you believe we still hold any such information, you may request its deletion by emailing privacy@petkey.org.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated Policy with a new "Last updated" date and, where required, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Services after an update takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
